How Many Hours to Register as a Massage Practitioner in Thailand

If you are about to pay for massage training in Thailand, there is one number to remember.

150 hours.

Why 150

The Department of Health Service Support requires anyone registering as a health massage practitioner to complete an accredited course of no fewer than 150 hours.

That figure is judged sufficient for a student to understand:

• Basic anatomy and physiology
• Indications and contraindications — who may and may not be treated
• Practical skill safe enough to take a real client
• Professional ethics and hygiene

Below that, the assessment is that you are not yet ready to take responsibility for someone else's body.

Then what are 30, 60 and 100-hour courses for?

They are useful — for different purposes.

A common strategy among our graduates: start with foot reflexology 60 hours to begin earning quickly, then return for the 150-hour course.

Documents required for registration

1. Copy of national ID card
2. Copy of house registration
3. One-inch photo taken within the last six months
4. Copy of educational qualification
5. Original and copy of the 150-hour massage certificate
6. Medical certificate
7. Completed SorPorSor.14 application form

File at the Provincial Public Health Office where you are domiciled, or the Department of Health Service Support if you live in Bangkok.

Why some certificates are rejected

This is where people lose money. A certificate fails when:

1. The course was under 150 hours — the single most common reason.

2. The institution has no Ministry of Education establishment licence — a "training centre" that is not registered as a school issues a certificate with no weight.

3. The curriculum is not accredited by the Ministry of Public Health — some places hold a school licence but an unaccredited curriculum.

4. The certificate omits contact hours or the licence number — officials cannot verify it, so they cannot accept it.

5. It was a fully online course — no supervised practical hours.

How to check before paying

Ask these three questions at any school, and ask to see the supporting documents:

1. "May I see your establishment licence?"
2. "Is this curriculum accredited by the Ministry of Public Health?"
3. "May I see a sample of the certificate you actually issue?"

A school that answers immediately and shows you is a school worth considering.

What if you already trained and the certificate is unusable?

The bad news: those hours usually cannot be carried over.

The good news: the skill has not disappeared. When you take a proper 150-hour course you will move faster than someone starting from zero, and most people adapt quickly.

What matters is finding instructors who will correct the habits you picked up, not simply teach over the top of them.
